Biography

Pierre Vermeulen, b. 1992, currently lives and works in Cape Town, South Africa. MFA, 2021 University of Stellenbosch.

Pierre Vermeulen’s practice is rooted in the embodied rituals of meditation and alchemical themes. His works are characterised by his use of gold leaf imitate on linen and sweat for its corrosive relationship – using orchids woven from human hair, Vermeulen has developed a technique to create oxidised imprints on the surface of the gold leaf imitate. 

In 2023, Vermeulen presented Formats for Transition, a solo exhibition and Jburg Art Fair, Johannesburg, South Africa with Reservoir Projects in Cape Town. He participated at the presentations of What If The World gallery in Cape Town at MiArt, Milan, Italy; Artissima, Turin, Italy; Art Cologne, Cologne, Germany and Abu Dhabi Art Fair, Abu Dhabi. Vermeulen also took part in the group exhibition: Of their time (7), A look at private collections at the museum Frac Grand Large, Dunkerque, France. Pinakothek der Moderne Benefizauktion, Munich, Germany.
